In an attempt to enhance transparency and improve communication with fans, chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has disclosed plans for Premier League referees to provide explanations when changing their decisions after visiting the VAR monitor. The proposed change would only apply in instances where the referee physically goes to the pitch-side monitor and not for routine VAR checks that do not result in overturning the on-field decision. This move is anticipated to enhance fan comprehension of the VAR process by offering more clarity on the decision-making factors.
The initiative to have referees announce their decisions post-VAR review has already been introduced in international tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup, after a successful 12-month trial by the IFAB. Although initially met with skepticism at the tournament, where explanations were often overshadowed by crowd reactions, FIFA adapted the process to begin with the explanation first before revealing the final decision. Several leagues like Liga MX, MLS, and the Australia A League have adopted this policy, proving its effectiveness in enhancing transparency.
In a recent incident during Nottingham Forest’s match against Everton, a clear VAR error occurred when a penalty should have been awarded but was not. This error highlighted the importance of refining the VAR protocol to ensure accurate decision-making on the field. Despite the initiation of semiautomated offside technology (SAOT) in the upcoming Premier League season, further testing and development are required before its full implementation to guarantee accuracy and efficiency in the offside calls.
The introduction of SAOT aims to expedite the offside review process by eliminating the need for manually dropping lines from players’ body positions, thus reducing waiting time for VAR decisions. Although SAOT is expected to increase accuracy and provide a clearer visualization of the final result, there may be instances of more marginal offsides due to the elimination of a tolerance level.
