In a recent announcement by the English Football League (EFL), Sheffield United has been penalized with a two-point deduction at the beginning of the next season. This penalty was imposed due to defaulting on payments to other clubs during the 2022-2023 season. Additionally, the club has been given a further two points suspended, which will come into effect if they fail to make payments to another club.
Despite the disappointing outcome of the disciplinary proceedings, Sheffield United has decided not to appeal the sanction. The club has also agreed to cover the EFL’s costs amounting to GBP 310,455 ($388,565.48). In a statement, Sheffield United expressed their regret over the deduction, attributing it to the delay in receiving payments from other clubs, which affected their financial position.
The club’s decision not to contest the penalty was influenced by the desire to avoid a potentially higher deduction or additional transfer embargoes. Sheffield United believed that reaching an agreement swiftly would prevent them from being embroiled in lengthy and costly legal battles, allowing them to focus on their performance in the future.
Sheffield United contested the EFL’s decision to refer them to a Disciplinary Commission, arguing that the relevant payments had been made in full. They claim that in some instances, the payments were settled shortly after the due date, while in others, new payment arrangements had been agreed upon before the referral was made. The club emphasized that the delayed payments were related to five different player transfers, totaling over 600 days.
As things stand, Sheffield United finds themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table with 16 points from 31 games. They are trailing behind Nottingham Forest by nine points, who currently occupy the 17th position and are above the relegation zone. Despite the financial setback, the club remains determined to improve their performance on the field and secure their position in the league.
