Reports have emerged that Manchester United are looking to engage Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil for a potential role in their new coaching setup at Old Trafford. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group now at the helm of football operations at United, following the acquisition of a 27% stake in the club, sources indicate that the new regime, spearheaded by Ineos director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, is keen on establishing a fresh coaching structure with a head coach at the forefront.
While the final decision on Erik ten Hag’s future as manager remains uncertain, sources reveal that United have already considered England manager Gareth Southgate, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank as potential successors. O’Neil, who assumed the role of manager at Molineux last August after Julen Lopetegui’s departure, has steered Wolves into the race for European qualification this season. He successfully kept Bournemouth in the Premier League during his debut top-flight managerial stint last season, reflecting his capabilities in the role.
Expressed Interest from Manchester United
It has been disclosed that the 40-year-old O’Neil has been notified of Manchester United’s interest, with key individuals from the club indicating a willingness to engage in discussions regarding his intentions. While the specific role that United may be considering offering O’Neil remains undisclosed, sources have confirmed the club’s interest in the Wolves head coach. Additionally, apart from evaluating potential managerial candidates, United is also focusing on enhancing their entire coaching team.
O’Neil, who embarked on his managerial career with Wolves on a three-year contract last summer, presents United with the prospect of having to negotiate compensation should they decide to recruit him. The former Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, and West Ham United midfielder kickstarted his coaching journey with Liverpool U-18s, having been enlisted by Michael Edwards during the latter’s tenure as the club’s sporting director. O’Neil and Edwards had collaborated previously during Portsmouth’s stint in the Premier League in the early 2000s.
