Weston McKennie set to stay at Juventus and train with first team

There have been recent developments regarding the future of United States international Weston McKennie at Juventus. Initially, it seemed like McKennie was on his way out of the Serie A club this summer. However, according to ESPN sources, the 25-year-old midfielder could now potentially stay at Juventus. This change of plans comes after McKennie held talks with manager Thiago Motta and is currently back training with the first-team squad in preparation for Monday’s Serie A opener against Como.

McKennie was notably left out of Juventus’ squad for their final two preseason matches against Brest and Atlético Madrid, along with Wojciech Szczęsny and Federico Chiesa. Following the 2-2 draw with Brest on August 3rd, manager Thiago Motta stated that the excluded players were “not part of the project” and needed to find new clubs promptly. While Szczęsny has since left Juventus after mutually terminating his contract, Chiesa remains at the club but has not been included in the first-team either.

Initially, it was reported that McKennie was likely to depart Juventus with interest from clubs like Fiorentina, Aston Villa, Everton, Bundesliga, and MLS. Serie A side Fiorentina seemed to be the front-runners for his signature before the recent turn of events at Juventus. McKennie, who has represented the USMNT on 56 occasions, had been a key player for Juventus last season, featuring in 34 Serie A matches.

After the discussions with manager Thiago Motta this week, Weston McKennie finds himself back in contention for a spot in the matchday squad for Monday’s game against Como. While it appeared that his future lay away from Juventus, the possibility of him staying and playing a role in the team cannot be ruled out just yet.

The situation surrounding Weston McKennie’s potential departure from Juventus has taken a surprising turn. With talks held between the player and manager Thiago Motta, there is a chance that McKennie could remain at the Serie A club and be involved in their upcoming fixtures. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold in the coming days, but for now, Weston McKennie is back in training and could feature in Juventus’ squad for their Serie A opener.
