The suspension stemmed from allegations that he used a racial slur against New England Revolution forward Bobby Wood during last season’s playoffs, resulting in a three-game suspension in November. However, the suspension was set to carry over into the current season until Wagner completed the league’s new restorative practices program.
The allegations against Wagner arose from an incident during the playoffs where he was accused of using a German word that is considered racist towards Asians towards Bobby Wood in the 86th minute of the game. In the video from the match, a verbal altercation between Wood and Wagner can be observed. Bobby Wood, who has Japanese and African-American heritage, and Kai Wagner, a native of Germany, were engaged in a heated exchange during the match. It is important to note that Wood speaks German due to his time playing in Germany for 14 years.
In response to the incident, Major League Soccer and its players’ union collaborated to implement a new joint anti-discrimination policy. This policy, developed in conjunction with the group Black Players for Change, adopts a restorative approach to address issues of discrimination within the league. Wagner’s completion of the restorative practices program enabled him to have his suspension lifted before the start of the new season.
Kai Wagner, who is entering his sixth season with the Philadelphia Union, has had a successful career in Major League Soccer. He was recognized as an MLS All-Star in both 2021 and 2022, as well as being named to the MLS Best XI in 2022. Despite the controversy surrounding his suspension, Wagner’s on-field performance and accolades demonstrate his skill and value as a player for the Union.
