The PFA Players of the Year Shortlist Revealed: A Breakdown of the Contenders

In a season that saw Manchester City clinch their fourth successive league title, it comes as no surprise that their star players feature prominently in the PFA men’s Player of the Year shortlist. Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Rodri lead the pack, with Haaland impressively securing his second consecutive Golden Boot with 27 league goals. Foden, on the other hand, has already claimed the Premier League’s Player of the Season and the Football Writers’ Player of the Season awards. Rodri’s unbeaten streak of 74 games for club and country until the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United solidifies his spot as a top contender for the prestigious accolade.

Martin Ødegaard from Arsenal and Cole Palmer from Chelsea are also in contention for the Player of the Year award. Palmer, in particular, stands out as the only candidate with a chance of clinching both the Young Player of the Year and the main prize after an outstanding debut season at Stamford Bridge, where he amassed an impressive 22 goals and 11 assists. This highlights the depth of young talent emerging in the Premier League.

Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins rounds out the list of nominations, reflecting his pivotal role in helping the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1982-83. Watkins’ contributions on the field have not gone unnoticed by his peers, as players vote for their standout performers from the 2023-24 Premier League season. His inclusion in the shortlist is a testament to his impact on Aston Villa’s success.

The PFA also announced the nominations for the women’s Player of the Year award, with standout players like Lauren James, Erin Cuthbert, and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw in the running. James, Cuthbert, and Chelsea teammate Niamh Charles played crucial roles in helping Chelsea secure their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title. Shaw, the division’s top scorer with 22 goals, was instrumental in Manchester City’s title race, pushing it to the final day. The inclusion of players like Yui Hasegawa and Lauren Hemp further adds diversity to the nominees, with Hasegawa aiming to become the first Japanese player to win the prestigious individual award.

The anticipation builds as the winners of both the men’s and women’s PFA Player of the Year awards will be revealed on Aug. 20. The recognition of these outstanding athletes serves as a celebration of their hard work, talent, and dedication to their respective teams, further cementing their status as football’s elite.
