The Netherlands national team has been hit with disappointing news as Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out of the upcoming European Championships. The 27-year-old midfielder suffered a right ankle injury during Barcelona’s match against Real Madrid in April, which has ultimately led to him missing out on the tournament.
Expressing his disappointment, De Jong took to social media to share his feelings about missing out on the Euro 2020. He mentioned that despite putting in a lot of effort in the past few weeks to recover, his ankle requires more time to heal. The midfielder expressed his sadness at not being able to represent his country in a major tournament and mentioned that he will now support the team from the sidelines.
Following the news of De Jong’s injury and subsequent withdrawal from the Euros, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman criticized Barcelona’s handling of the midfielder’s injuries throughout the season. Koeman expressed his frustration at the risks taken by the club, which have now resulted in De Jong being unable to participate in the tournament.
With De Jong ruled out of Euro 2020, he will now focus on his recovery process back at Barcelona. The midfielder will continue his rehabilitation work while Koeman deliberates on whether to call up a replacement for the former Ajax player.
As the Netherlands prepare to kick off their Euro 2020 campaign, they will have to do so without one of their key players in Frenkie de Jong. The absence of the talented midfielder will undoubtedly be felt by the team, but they will have to regroup and focus on performing well in the tournament despite this setback.
