The Impending Appointment of Dan Ashworth as Manchester United’s Sporting Director

Manchester United is currently in negotiations with Newcastle United to finalize a settlement that will allow Dan Ashworth to join the club as their new sporting director. After expressing his desire to make the switch to Old Trafford, Ashworth has been on leave from Newcastle since February. The two clubs are reportedly close to reaching an agreement on a compensation fee of around £20 million.

With the impending arrival of Dan Ashworth, Manchester United is set to make significant changes to their leadership team. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has recently become a co-owner of the club, adding to the fresh faces in managerial positions. Omar Berrada is scheduled to take on the role of CEO on July 13, bringing his experience from Manchester City. Additionally, Jason Wilcox has already assumed the position of technical director after his move from Southampton.

Despite the progress in negotiations, there have been challenges in appointing Ashworth due to Newcastle’s reluctance to let him go. Ratcliffe has criticized Newcastle for being “very awkward” throughout the negotiation process, causing delays in Ashworth’s transition to Manchester United. The club’s player recruitment plans have been affected by the delay, with full-speed operations expected only once Ashworth is officially onboard.

During Ashworth’s absence, Manchester United has relied on the efforts of Jason Wilcox, chief scout Steve Brown, and head of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves to drive the club’s summer transfer plans. The club has identified the need to strengthen the squad by signing a centre-back, striker, and central midfielder in the upcoming transfer window. Moreover, Erik ten Hag is set to continue as the manager for the next season, with plans to renew his coaching staff with the additions of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake.

The impending appointment of Dan Ashworth as Manchester United’s sporting director marks a significant step towards reshaping the club’s leadership structure. Despite facing challenges in negotiations with Newcastle United, the club is hopeful of finalizing the settlement soon. With a focus on strengthening the squad and enhancing the coaching staff, Manchester United is gearing up for an exciting season ahead under the new leadership.
