Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, recently made it clear that the club does not plan on making any more big-money signings like Declan Rice in the upcoming transfer window. This decision comes after Arsenal broke their transfer record by spending £105 million to acquire the services of the English international last July. The Gunners made their first significant move of the current transfer window by securing Riccardo Calafiori for £42 million, as he joined the team in Philadelphia for their preseason tour.
No Expectations
Arteta, when asked about the possibility of another big-money signing like Rice, stated, “We don’t expect to do anything like it. That’s the reality. We have to wait and see the movements in the market. We have already identified the things that we can improve.” The manager emphasized that while they have identified areas for improvement in the team, the club’s focus is not on splurging on high-priced players. He expressed satisfaction with the current squad, indicating that any additions would be made judiciously.
Arteta also addressed the availability of players who participated in the Euro 2024 final, such as Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale, Rice, and David Raya. He mentioned that they will rejoin the squad at the end of the week when Arsenal returns to the UK. When questioned about their readiness for the opening Premier League game against Wolves on Aug. 17, Arteta expressed confidence, stating, “I’m very confident because when I spoke to them, they really wanted to be part of it as quick as possible.”
Arsenal’s decision to refrain from pursuing big-money signings signals a shift in their transfer strategy. Instead of focusing on marquee acquisitions, the club appears to be prioritizing incremental improvements to the existing squad. By conducting meetings earlier in the year to identify areas for enhancement, Arteta and the management team aim to make strategic additions that align with the team’s long-term goals.
