Following the Euro 2024 match with Italy, Croatia has been fined a hefty amount of €105,000 by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body. This fine came as a result of various incidents that occurred during the game, including the throwing of objects, lighting flares, and inappropriate behavior by Croatian fans. The atmosphere surrounding the match in Leipzig was quite tense, with Croatian fans lighting flares and throwing plastic cups onto the pitch on multiple occasions.
Leipzig police were actively involved before, during, and after the Croatia vs. Italy game. They made several arrests, particularly targeting known troublemakers among Croatian fans. Prior to the match, it was reported that eight high-risk fans, who had previously been denied entry to Germany by the Federal Police, were in the area. Police managed to take five individuals into custody immediately. The remaining three were also apprehended later, and all eight were released the following morning and escorted to the border.
The behavior of some Croatian fans escalated beyond the use of pyrotechnic products during the game. After the match, around 20 Croatian supporters physically assaulted Italian fans, resulting in two individuals requiring hospitalization. This led to 11 Croatian and Bosnian suspects being taken into custody by the police and investigated for causing grievous bodily harm. Such incidents tarnish the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play that should be upheld during football matches.
It is evident that the antisocial conduct of a small group of fans can have far-reaching consequences for the reputation of the team and the country they represent.
