Serbia’s Football Association has issued a stark warning to UEFA regarding the recent incidents of offensive chanting between fans of Croatia and Albania during the Euro 2024 tournament. Jovan Surbatovic, the general secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, has stated that Serbia may consider withdrawing from the competition if UEFA does not take appropriate action in response to the alleged misconduct.
The offensive chants were heard during the 2-2 draw between Croatia and Albania in Hamburg, prompting Serbia to call for sanctions against the federations of both teams involved. Surbatovic expressed his dismay at the situation, labeling it as scandalous and emphasizing the need for UEFA to address the issue promptly.
In a controversial move, UEFA cancelled the media credentials of a Kosovar journalist, Arlind Sadiku, for reportedly making a nationalist gesture towards Serbia fans during their match against England. This decision further fueled tensions between the different factions and highlighted the ongoing conflict within the European football community.
The Serbian Football Association was also charged by UEFA for the behavior of their supporters, including displaying a banner with a provocative message and throwing objects inside the stadium. These incidents led to complaints from the Kosovo Football Federation, accusing Serbian fans of promoting political, chauvinistic, and racist messages during the matches.
Surbatovic defended the Serbian fans’ behavior, arguing that they had been unfairly singled out for punishment despite the overall positive conduct displayed. He reiterated Serbia’s stance on demanding justice from UEFA and warned of potential consequences if the governing body failed to address the situation effectively.
