Manchester United intensifies pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Matteo de Ligt

Manchester United have reportedly increased their interest in acquiring Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to sources familiar with the situation. The club has initiated contact with De Ligt’s representatives, with an official bid expected to be submitted to Bayern imminently. This strategic move comes after facing difficulties in negotiations with Everton regarding Jarrad Branthwaite.

Transfer Strategy

Manager Erik ten Hag is eager to strengthen the team’s defense by bringing in a new center-back, particularly to fill the void left by Raphaël Varane’s departure. In addition to De Ligt, United has also shown interest in Lille’s Leny Yoro and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi. While Real Madrid is currently the front-runner in the race to sign Yoro, Liverpool has also expressed interest in Guéhi.

Securing a quality center-back is a top priority for Manchester United’s summer transfer agenda, alongside acquiring a striker and a central midfielder. The club has been monitoring De Ligt since his days at Ajax and had previously attempted to sign him before his move to Juventus in 2019. De Ligt’s availability from Bayern presents a new opportunity for United to reinforce their defense.

With De Ligt potentially joining the ranks, United may also part ways with Victor Lindelöf and Harry Maguire during this transfer window. Fenerbahce has shown interest in Lindelöf, who has only one year remaining on his contract. The club is also engaged in negotiations with Jonny Evans regarding a contract extension. If either Lindelöf or Maguire departs, United will aim to bring in two center-backs to bolster their defensive lineup.

While United is eager to strengthen their squad, the club is mindful of financial constraints and the need to balance the squad effectively. Adding another striker to replace Anthony Martial, who recently left upon the expiration of his contract, is also a pressing concern for the recruitment department. The club’s strategic approach to the transfer market reflects a commitment to enhancing the team while remaining fiscally responsible.
