Inter Miami CF Head Coach Tata Martino Denies Possibility of Signing Major Players Due to MLS Roster Rules

Inter Miami CF head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has made it clear that signing players like Ángel Di María and Sergio Romero is not economically or legally feasible due to Major League Soccer’s strict roster rules. Despite reports from ESPN Argentina indicating talks with Di María, Martino emphasized the limitations the team faces within the league’s regulations.

Martino has expressed frustration with MLS roster rules in the past, particularly after being knocked out of the Concacaf Champions Cup by CF Monterrey. He believes that the current rules put MLS at a disadvantage compared to Liga MX, and that changes need to be made to level the playing field. However, he acknowledges that the process of altering the rules may take time.

With players like Leonardo Campana, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi occupying Inter Miami’s three Designated Player slots, there is limited salary capacity for additional high-profile signings like Di María. The team would need to offload players and free up salary space to comply with MLS regulations before considering such acquisitions.

Potential for Future Signings

Martino did not completely rule out the possibility of signing top players in the future, indicating that the transfer window in mid-July could provide opportunities for improvement. While Inter Miami is currently focused on the ongoing MLS season and the upcoming Leagues Cup tournament, Martino remains open to exploring options to strengthen the team.

For the time being, Inter Miami will rely on their current players for the remainder of the 2024 MLS season and the Leagues Cup. The team is currently leading the Eastern Conference table and will face the New York Red Bulls in their next match at Chase Stadium on July 24th. Despite the limitations imposed by MLS roster rules, Martino is committed to making the most of the team’s current roster and exploring opportunities for improvement in the future.
