Ilkay Gündogan Rejoins Manchester City After Barcelona Contract Termination

Ilkay Gündogan has made a comeback to Manchester City after parting ways with Barcelona due to mutual agreement. The German midfielder has inked a one-year deal with City, with an option for a further extension of 12 months.

Gündogan’s departure from Barcelona came after the Catalan club signed Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig, deeming him surplus to requirements. Barcelona’s unstable financial situation led to the need for clearing wage bill space to register Olmo for LaLiga. City did not have to pay any fee for Gündogan’s return, with remaining wages from his Barcelona contract reportedly being waived off.

Gündogan’s Statement

In a message shared before City’s official announcement, Gündogan expressed his feelings about leaving Barcelona, mentioning, “After just one year it’s already time to say goodbye. I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way.” He further added, “Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.”

Before his stint at Barcelona, Gündogan had a successful spell at Manchester City, winning 12 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and one Champions League. His seven years at the club were described as a time of pure contentment by Gündogan himself.

Gündogan expressed his anticipation for returning to Manchester City, highlighting his respect for Pep Guardiola. He stated, “To have the opportunity to return here means so much…working with [Guardiola] every day makes you a better player. You feel constantly challenged, which for any professional is exactly what you want.”

Despite the challenges faced at Barcelona, Gündogan is looking forward to contributing to Manchester City once again and continuing his successful career under the guidance of Pep Guardiola. His return to the Premier League club marks a fresh start and a new chapter in his football journey.
