Denmark Coach Steps Down Following Euro 2024 Elimination

After Denmark’s disappointing exit in the round of 16 at Euro 2024, coach Kasper Hjulmand made the decision to step down from his position. Citing the need for new energy within the team, Hjulmand believed it was time for a change following their elimination by Germany. This marked the end of his successful tenure that included a semifinal finish at the previous Euros in 2021.

In the wake of Hjulmand’s departure, the Danish federation appointed Morten Wieghorst, the assistant coach, to lead the team for the Nations League program until November. With Denmark placed in a challenging group alongside Spain, Switzerland, and Serbia, Wieghorst will have his work cut out for him as he looks to guide the team through this transition period.

Despite a promising start to Euro 2024 with draws against England, Slovenia, and Serbia in the group stage, Denmark’s campaign came to a controversial end against Germany. The match was marred by a lengthy delay due to a lightning storm, followed by contentious VAR decisions that ultimately went against Denmark. The disallowed goal and penalty awarded to Germany proved to be decisive moments in a 2-0 defeat for the Danes.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifying on the horizon, Denmark will need to regroup under new leadership to bounce back from their Euro 2024 disappointment. The team’s performances in recent tournaments have shown glimpses of their potential, but they will need to overcome challenges both on and off the field to achieve success on the international stage. As they prepare for the next chapter, Denmark will be aiming to build on their past accomplishments and make a strong push towards qualification for the upcoming World Cup.
