Claudio Ranieri, the 72-year-old coach of Cagliari, has announced his departure from the Serie A club by mutual agreement. Reports suggest that Ranieri is set to retire from football, with Cagliari being his final team. This decision comes after Cagliari secured another season in the Italian top flight with an away win at Sassuolo. Ranieri, who had previously managed Cagliari in 1988, had one year remaining on his contract after leading the team to promotion from Serie B last season.
In a statement, Cagliari expressed their gratitude towards Ranieri, acknowledging his ability to lead the team to achieve their objectives. Ranieri’s impact on the club has been described as indelible, with his contribution to Cagliari’s history being greatly appreciated. Fans of the club are said to have tears of joy and gratitude for Ranieri, recognizing the memorable moments he created during his time with the team.
While Ranieri will coach Cagliari for the final time on Thursday against Fiorentina, his illustrious coaching career extends beyond his time with the Serie A club. Known for guiding Leicester City to a fairytale Premier League title in 2016, Ranieri has managed top clubs such as Juventus, AS Roma, and Inter Milan in Serie A. Additionally, he has coached in LaLiga with Valencia and Atletico Madrid, as well as in the Premier League with Chelsea, Fulham, and Watford.
In a video on Cagliari’s social media, Ranieri explained his decision to retire, stating, “I have decided to leave now and it is the right thing to do.” His tenure with Cagliari marks the end of a successful coaching career that has seen him achieve remarkable feats in various top leagues across Europe. As he bids farewell to the club and its fans, Ranieri leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be remembered by all who have witnessed his coaching genius.
