Barcelona’s financial woes have been a major obstacle in registering new players, including Olmo. However, Article 77 of LaLiga’s Regulations for the Preparation of Budgets provides a solution for the club. In the event of a long-term injury to a player, clubs are allowed to exceed their spending limit to register new additions. In this case, an injury to Andreas Christensen has freed up cap space for Barcelona to register Olmo ahead of the upcoming game.
Barcelona has made strategic moves to free up space for registering Olmo, including the departure of several players such as Ilkay Gündogan, Vitor Roque, Mika Faye, and Clément Lenglet. These outgoings, however, were still not enough to inscribe Olmo until the injury to Christensen provided the necessary salary space. The temporary registration for Olmo is expected to be valid until December 31, with hopes that a permanent solution will be found before the January transfer window.
This is not the first time Barcelona has utilized Article 77 to register players due to financial constraints. Last winter, the club used the same formula to register Vitor Roque, and earlier this month, they employed this strategy to register Iñigo Martínez for the start of the season. The club’s financial situation, with a spending cap set by LaLiga, has forced them to make strategic moves to stay within the limits.
Barcelona’s spending cap has been a significant challenge, with the club looking to return to LaLiga’s 1:1 rule before the close of the transfer window. This rule would allow them to spend 100% of any savings or funds raised, providing more flexibility in the transfer market. Until then, the club can only spend a percentage of their savings, limiting their ability to register new players without making significant adjustments to their wage bill or transfer strategy.
