Borussia Dortmund are currently considering the possibility of bringing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood to their squad. The decision regarding this potential move is slated to be made after the upcoming Champions League final against Real Madrid. Greenwood, who is 22 years old, is expected to return to Old Trafford after a successful loan spell at LaLiga side Getafe, where he managed to score 8 goals in 33 league appearances and was even named the club’s player of the season.
Several clubs, including Juventus and Atlético Madrid, have been linked with an interest in signing Greenwood. However, Dortmund, who currently have winger Jadon Sancho on loan from United, have emerged as a possible destination for the young forward. With only a year left on his contract with United, reports from Germany have indicated that Dortmund are willing to take Greenwood on loan. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl, while speaking at the club’s Champions League final media day, mentioned that all decisions regarding transfers are on hold until after the final on Saturday against Madrid.
Greenwood’s recent past has been marred by controversy, especially during his time at Manchester United. Following an arrest on suspicion of rape and assault, the player was suspended by the club while legal proceedings took place. Ultimately, all charges against Greenwood were dropped due to lack of evidence to secure a conviction. Despite being cleared of the allegations, United opted to not have Greenwood resume his career at Old Trafford, leading to his loan move to Getafe.
While Getafe is interested in signing Greenwood for another season, sources have suggested that Manchester United would prefer a permanent transfer with a transfer fee involved. It has been reported that United will extend Greenwood’s contract for another year if he goes out on loan this summer. This extension would allow the club to potentially sell him for a transfer fee in the following year.
