Former Spanish Football Federation President Denies Claims of Corruption

Former Spanish Football Federation president, Luis Rubiales, has vehemently denied any allegations of corruption and wrongdoing amidst an ongoing investigation regarding the decision to move the Spanish Supercopa to Saudi Arabia. Rubiales, who was briefly detained and questioned by police upon his return to Madrid from the Dominican Republic, refuted claims that his own business investments played a role in the controversial move. The investigation stems from a three-year deal made by the RFEF with the Saudi sports authority in 2019 to host the competition in Saudi Arabia.

Rubiales adamantly denied having any business interests in Saudi Arabia, despite reports suggesting otherwise. He specifically addressed rumors of having land to build hotels in Saudi Arabia as false. Additionally, Rubiales dismissed any allegations of receiving illegal commissions during his tenure as the head of the Spanish FA. The ongoing probe is also examining contracts related to the renovation of Seville’s La Cartuja stadium, which is set to host the upcoming Copa del Rey final and other international matches.

Former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué’s sports entertainment company, Kosmos, was involved in the deal between the federation and Saudi Arabia. Rubiales clarified that Kosmos presented the Saudi offer and that it was chosen over other options. He explicitly stated that he never received any bribes from Piqué or his company. The investigation was initiated following leaked audio recordings between Rubiales and Piqué discussing potential commissions, leading to a raid on Rubiales’ property in Granada and the RFEF offices in Madrid.

Amidst the ongoing investigations and allegations, Rubiales faces the prospect of a 2-1/2-year jail term for an incident involving an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Rubiales was forced to resign in September amid the scandal. The former Spanish Football Federation president continues to maintain his innocence in the face of multiple legal challenges and investigations.

The allegations and investigations surrounding Luis Rubiales have cast a shadow over his tenure as the head of the Spanish Football Federation. While he staunchly denies any involvement in corrupt activities or illegal dealings, the ongoing legal battles pose a significant threat to his reputation and future in the world of football administration. Only time will tell how these legal proceedings will unfold and what the ultimate ramifications will be for Rubiales and his associates.
