Former Brazil footballer Dani Alves is set to be released from prison after making the required €1 million bail payment as he awaits the result of an appeal to his rape conviction. Alves was handed a 4½ year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022 by Catalonia’s highest court. Despite being granted bail last Wednesday, Alves remained in prison until the payment was made on Friday.
In order to secure his release, Alves had to surrender his Brazilian and Spanish passports, post bail, and agree to remain within the country. He is also forbidden from coming within 1,000 meters of the victim or attempting to communicate with her. Additionally, Alves must make weekly visits to the courthouse and still maintains a residence near Barcelona.
