The Portland Timbers Secure Jonathan Rodríguez from Club América

In a recent development, the Portland Timbers have successfully negotiated with Club América to bring on board the talented Uruguay forward, Jonathan Rodríguez. Sources close to ESPN Mexico have confirmed that a deal has been struck between the two clubs for the acquisition of the player.

Rodríguez, who recently trained with Club América’s U-23 squad, is finalizing a lucrative four-year designated player contract with the Timbers. The Uruguayan striker is set to make his journey to Portland later this week, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his career.

It has been revealed that a $6 million transfer fee was agreed upon by the clubs for Rodríguez’s move. Despite not being part of the squad during Club América’s recent matches against Chivas and Tigres UANL, the 30-year-old forward has had a productive season, contributing nine goals and three assists across various competitions.

Prior to joining Club América, Rodríguez had stints in Liga MX with Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul. In 2022, he ventured into the Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr, where he made eight appearances and scored one goal before making his way back to Mexico.

Having made his debut for the Uruguay national team in 2014, Rodríguez recently earned a call-up under manager Marcelo Bielsa in 2023 after a two-year absence from international duty. This inclusion came following his impressive performances, which also led to him being considered for the 2022 World Cup.

The signing of Jonathan Rodríguez by the Portland Timbers signifies a major coup for the Major League Soccer club. With his experience, goal-scoring ability, and international pedigree, Rodríguez is poised to make a significant impact on the team and contribute towards their quest for success in the upcoming seasons. This move reflects the Timbers’ ambition to compete at the highest level and showcases their commitment to strengthening the squad with top-tier talent.
