This year’s event, taking place on July 24 at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, marks a return to the MLS vs. Liga MX format after a brief hiatus for the 2023 edition, which featured Arsenal. According to Camilo Durana, MLS’ Executive Vice President of Properties and Events, the previous two All-Star Games against Liga MX have set an exceptional standard for intensity and competition on the field, and the decision to bring them back reflects the success of this format.
With victories in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the MLS All-Star Game, MLS boasts an undefeated record against Liga MX, highlighting the competitiveness between the two leagues. The collaboration between MLS and Liga MX extends beyond just the All-Star Game, including tournaments like Leagues Cup and Campeones Cup. The partnership aims to showcase the talent and stars from North America while sharing best practices for commercial success and talent development.
While there have been discussions about other potential formats for the MLS All-Star Game, facing Liga MX remains the most appealing option, considering the success of the partnership and the momentum generated by events like Leagues Cup. Durana hinted at the possibility of future editions of the All-Star Game continuing to feature Liga MX, based on the positive results and fan engagement seen from recent collaborations. The upcoming Leagues Cup, scheduled to begin on July 26, will once again bring together clubs from both MLS and Liga MX in a competitive tournament.
The MLS All-Star Game roster will consist of 26 players, with 12 players selected by fan vote, another 12 chosen by All-Star coach Wilfried Nancy, and the final two names picked by MLS Commissioner Don Garber. On the other hand, details about the 26-man roster for Liga MX are yet to be revealed. In addition to the All-Star Game, there will be a Skills Challenge on July 23, where each league has one victory.
