Xherdan Shaqiri and the Chicago Fire have officially terminated their contract, marking the end of Shaqiri’s unsatisfactory stint at the MLS club. The Switzerland midfielder arrived at Chicago from Lyon in 2022 for a record fee of $7.5 million, making him the highest-paid player in MLS at the time with an $8.15 million salary. However, his time at the club did not meet expectations, leading to the mutual agreement to part ways.
Despite his impressive resume with European powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Liverpool, Shaqiri failed to justify his hefty price tag and reputation in Chicago. In 75 matches, where he started 63 times, he managed to score only 16 goals and provide 20 assists across all competitions. The Fire’s inability to secure a spot in the MLS playoffs in 2022 and 2023 further highlighted Shaqiri’s struggles on the field.
Following the contract termination, Shaqiri, who has represented Switzerland 125 times, is now a free agent seeking new opportunities in his career. Expressing his gratitude towards the club and its supporters, Shaqiri mentioned that he believes it is the right time to move on and explore other options. He wished the Fire success in their future endeavors as he embarks on the next chapter of his professional journey.
Shaqiri’s departure coincides with the recent announcement of Chicago Fire FC sporting director Georg Heitz stepping down from his position by the end of 2024 due to personal reasons. These changes within the organization reflect a period of transition and restructuring as they look to redefine their strategies and goals for the upcoming seasons.
Xherdan Shaqiri’s time at the Chicago Fire may be characterized as a disappointment, given his inability to deliver as expected. The decision to part ways was deemed necessary for both the player and the club to move forward in their respective paths. As Shaqiri embarks on a new chapter in his career, Chicago Fire faces the challenge of restructuring and rebuilding to achieve success in the competitive landscape of MLS.
