Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino announced that Lionel Messi will not be playing in the team’s Leagues Cup round-of-32 match against Toronto FC. This is due to Messi still recovering from an ankle injury he sustained during Copa América. While Messi is improving daily, he is currently training in the gym and has not yet returned to the field. On the other hand, Luis Suárez will be available for the match after overcoming a knee injury that previously sidelined him for the MLS All-Star game and a group stage match against Tigres.
Additionally, Benjamin Cremaschi and Diego Gómez are set to rejoin the team after completing their international duties. Cremaschi represented the U.S. in the Paris Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals, while Gómez played for Paraguay up to the quarterfinal stage. Both players are deemed fit to play and will be included in the squad for the upcoming game.
With the majority of the squad available, Inter Miami’s main goal is to secure a victory against Toronto FC in order to progress to the next round of the tournament. Coach Martino emphasized the importance of playing with intensity and acknowledged the talent within the Toronto team. Despite acknowledging the difficulty of the upcoming match, Martino is confident in his players’ abilities to perform well on the field.
The absence of Lionel Messi and the return of Luis Suárez pose both challenges and opportunities for Inter Miami as they prepare to face Toronto FC. The team’s depth will be tested as they aim to secure a win and advance in the Leagues Cup. With the dedication and determination shown by the players and coaching staff, Inter Miami remains hopeful of a positive result in the upcoming clash.
