Examining the Negative Backlash on Enzo Fernández’s Discriminatory Chant Video

The recent video of Enzo Fernández and his Argentina teammates singing a discriminatory chant has sparked controversy and backlash. Many, including Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, believe that Enzo is facing undeserved criticism for the incident. Mac Allister defends Enzo by stating that the chant was not sung with bad intentions and was more of a mocking tone that got carried away. He emphasizes that Enzo has already apologized for his actions, and that should be acknowledged and respected.

The offensive chants that were directed towards France players of African heritage resurfaced prior to the 2022 World Cup final between France and Argentina, leading to widespread discontent among players. Enzo Fernández’s club teammates from Chelsea, Wesley Fofana and Christopher Nkunku, expressed their disappointment over the incident. In addition, Argentina international Rodrigo de Paul believes that Enzo is being unfairly targeted. He argues that there are better ways to address the issue rather than publicly shaming Enzo.

Following the video controversy, Argentina’s government took action by removing the country’s undersecretary of sport, Julio Garro, from his position. Garro had called for Argentina captain Lionel Messi and the AFA president Claudio Tapia to apologize for the video. This move indicates the seriousness with which the government is taking the situation. Mac Allister also defends his country by stating that Argentina is not a racist country and that racism is not a common topic of discussion in their society.

The backlash faced by Enzo Fernández for the discriminatory chant video highlights the complexities of addressing racism and discrimination in sports. It is crucial to acknowledge and learn from such incidents, but it is also important to provide constructive criticism and facilitate dialogue rather than resorting to public shame and attacks. Ultimately, the focus should be on educating and promoting acceptance and understanding among individuals and communities, both within the sports world and beyond.
